13/04/2008 : Jabez 2 : Prayer
Jabez 2: Prayer
1 Chr 4:9-10
Only 2 men in the entire bible that receive instant answer from God : David & Jabez
Honorable : Kabud (Heb.) great, weight, substance
Having the appetite to soak in God's presence is more important than simply coming into God's presence
We need to be spiritually hungry
1. Bless my soul - our spiritual life
2. Enlarge my territory - Our influence for God
3. Hand upon me - God's presence in our lives
4. Keep my from my enemy - God's protection over our lives
Prayer life
my prayer life will determine my destiny
Samson was the only judge that never delivered the children of Israel
Although he was also probably the most gifted
I need to be spiritually hungry
Isa 40:30

05/04/2008 : Thinking with Excellence
Thinking with Excellence
2 Pet 1:5-7
7 stages of Spiritual development
1. Virtue : Arete (gk.) = excellence
this word is mentioned in the bible 70 times
Excellence - to exceed a given standard that is ordinary, average, terrible or unworthy
1. To be superior in quality
Quality is never by change but a result of high intention
The call of God is always a call to excellence - never a call to mediocrity
No 2nd strike mentality
It's not about how nice but how good we are
Disorder invites even more disorder
Sol 2:15
2. Excellence is to obtain greater in quantity
Jn 15:16
cannot drop my standard
i must be willing to pay for the price of my success
Ps 126:5-6
a. demand of our heart
Pro 4:23
Lessons - geographical boundaries
every trouble? see it as stepping stone!
b. demand on our time
we can never regain time. so don't idle it away
c. demand on our money
Lk 16:11
3. Excellence is to transcend my job description
Mat 5:41
1st mile : duty
2nd mile : love
Love only begins after the demans of duty have been met
Rom 13:8
4. Excellence is to outdo myself each time
i need to be better
Excellence is to exceed expectations
Eph 6:5-6, 7-8
How to change my thinking?
Right thinking -> right behaviour
Excellence is not extremist (perfectionism)
What then is thinking with excellence?
Not Law but Liberty Gal 5:13-16
Not System but Service Mat 20:25-28
Not Self-centered but Spirit-centered Zac 4:6
Not Legalism but Love
Not Fear but Faith 2 Tim 1:6
Not Control but Concern
Not Duty but Devotion Exo 17:12
Not Getting but Giving 2 Cor 9:6-7
Not Explanation but Example Jn 13:13-15
Not Bondage but Breakthrough

Right Decision - Your Keys to Success
Jam 1:5-8
A survey done revealed that criminals thought that successful people are simply people who are 'not caught' while successful people rendered their success as a result of hard work, being responsible & no good luck belief
To get where you want to go in life, we much start where we are
Decision, Dedication & Decisiveness is the quality needed to bring change
Opposite of decisiveness = Ambivalence will bring us to our inability to breakthrough

The Power of Forgiveness
Lk 23:33-34
Jesus was harshly trested when He's on His way to the cross
No death of dignity
Jesus was not asking God to forgive the Romans soldiers, the Jews or the Pharisee. But our sins & wrongdoings!
1. Unforgiveness keep the pain alive
Our joy will be robbed
2. Unforgivenss produces bitterness

Keys to Promotion
Servant Hood II
Mat 20:25-27
God only labeled us as good servants & not any other titles
So it’s not about being top (in name) but in our attitude
Ps 71:21
We can be great, because this will bring God glory…
Yet in the spiritual realm, we need to serve
Servant = Gk. Dirkopnos – Still a free soul
Slave = Gk. Doulos – not free
3 keys to promotion
1. Handling the little things
Lk 16:10
Details determine destiny
1 Kg 10
Things are in order due to discipline
We need to stay disciplined
Excellence is the attention given to details that leads to superior performance
2. Handling money
Lk 16:11
If we’re not even faithful in money (that has no righteousness or evilness) then how will God give us responsibilities in things that even more precious?
3. Handling what belongs to another person

02/03/2007 : Servanthood Part A
Servanthood Part A
Jn 13:2-5
Power, position, purpose
Jesus is fully aware that His 11 disciples will prove themselves imperfect in the time to come. Yet He is still secured in His power, position & purpose. He will not be wavered.
This sense show that none of the disciples serve each other before the supper (which is usually the custom – the one who serve is of the subordinate position & none of the disciples are willing to lower themselves.
But Jesus served…not serving out of fear or to score points
Jn 13:12-17
Are we ready to serve with all of our hearts?
It’s not a about others but how we see it
1. Servant hood is the key to promotion
Phil 2:5-7; 8-11; 12-15
Joseph: his circumstances have never ever been prefect yet it has never has any impact upon his character
2. Servant hood is the key to Authority
Lk 19:16

The Supernatural Ministry
Mat 14:22-23
Jesus’ ministry is based on the supernatural
Jesus had no fear unlike Peter
All of us have fears & this is normal
Only when we know Jesus intimately then can we have no unnatural fear towards God
God will take the fear of punishment/supernatural away
Jesus was here to show us that we can live a righteous life just like Him
Jesus is here to let us inherit Him
He does not want us to stay in the boat
We need to have the courage to move out
Jesus is a good God; He knows the disciples’ fears thus He always encouraged them,” Be of good cheer!”
Jesus’ plans often offered anxiety & unknown to His people. He wants us to be willing& to trust Him
The people in the boat, who’re actually disciples, will mock & teased, as not every disciple will be willing
But God is not interested in changing our circumstances but us!
God wants us to be overcomers
After all, allowing ourselves to be thrown into something extraordinary is either because we’re stupid or because we know we’ve God on our side
To be ready for tomorrow, we need to be ready today
Heb 2:14-15
Death => the fear of it comes from the aftermath. Satan’s only weapon comes from that
We worried about being rejected/ cast away

John Stephen Akhwari’s story
John Stephen Akhwari (b. 1938? in Mbulu, Tanganyika) was an Olympic athlete at the 1968 Summer Olympicsin Mexico City. He represented Tanzania in the marathon. During the race he fell, badly cutting his knee and dislocating the joint. Rather than quitting, he continued running. He finished last among the 74 competitors. When asked why he continued running, he said simply, "My country did not send me to Mexico City to start the race. They sent me to finish." There was an article written up in Delta's Sky Magazine. Akhwari has lent his name to the John Stephen Akhwari Athletic Foundation, an organization which supports Tanzanian athletes training for the Olympic Games. His story is featued in the Beijing 2008 Song Hero.

Your Redemption Value in God
Understanding the wisdom of Jesus
We need to come to know who God really is?
How? By coming to us in the form of Christ.
Christ – Shepherd
We? – Sheep!
Gen 4:19 - 20 (NLY v.2)
Background of this verse : - the capacity of man has been revealed and given to Adam. But he fall before he was able to experience his capacity
Yet we need to know that Fallen is not equivalent to the fact that our capacity has been taken away
Thus it has to be redeemed by Christ
Redeemed as God does not waste anything
He doesn’t just throw us away after Adam has fallen
We can still open-up our capacity to multiple, be fruitful, subdue & have dominance
Adam (fallen) = Corrupt & Perverted -> Cain (Evil) Vs Abel (Good)
Cain – City (Social Construct) -> Livestock (Poultry industry) -> Flute & Harp (Inventions) -> Tools (mining, purification & molding of metals?
Even though Cain, which represented the evil side of man, survived instead of Abel, but his capacity was not taken away. In fact the above showed that the entire human society has been build. Man is not merely monkeys.
Saving grace -> brings us out, change us & send us again to the social institutions
God’s mission is about redeeming the value within me
We should not be asking “What am I here for?”
Instead our life’s purpose should be built on “Who am I here for?”
We’re saved so that others can be saved
Separated from the world is not isolation from the world
Recall: Kristos Kas Kosmos
Culture [fallen] but redeemable
Because the Holy Spirit has been poured onto ALL man
There is value even in junk, which explains the existence of the junkyard -> value of junk can be seen there & what it eventually can become
Am I ready to be cleansed?
God will save the best for the last.
All creation is waiting for the full revelation of God
So we need to continue to learn, grow & increase!

13/01/2008 : Forgiveness (Letting go)
Forgiveness (Letting go)
Col 3:13
What is forgiveness?
Doesn't change your past but it will enlarge your future
1. Real forgiveness is unconditional
2. Forgiveness does not minimize the seriousness of the offense
Do not cheapen the forgiveness by joking about it
Pro 26:18-19
3. Forgiveness isn't resuming a relationship without expecting a change
Forgiveness is given from the offended while reconciliation is only possible from the offender
The offender must have the following
- Repentance
- Restitution
- Rebuilding trust
4. Forgiveness isn't forgetting what has happened
Focus on something else!
5. Forgiveness isn't my right when I wasn't the one hurt
Why do we forgive people?
We will never see something until we see value in it
Because God has a greater & better future for me in my life & without letting go of my past, I can never embrace my future
Do not let resentment & bitterness consume you!
Life is 10% "what happened" & 90% how we react to it
We will react based on our values
How do we know our values?
1. What is most important to me
2. What do I stand for
3. And what I am willing to pay the price for
Heb 12:16-17
We need to know what should be our values like the back of our hands
If we judge what we value by our circumstances, we will de-value want is important to give value to what is momentary
We need to build our values on God's principles so that we will not be ruled by our circumstances.
Hey 12:15
How do I forgive people?
1. Give up my right to get even
2. Set boundaries - walls with a gate
3. Respond evil with good
Lk 6:27-28
4. Repeating these steps as long as necessary
Forgiveness is not a 1-time event

29/12/2007 : Change Is Necessary For Growth
Change is Neccessary for Growth
Mat 18:1-4 (NIV)
Change is necessary for growth
Repent is Jesus’ ministry message
Change in the direction, action and eventually my destiny will too be changed in the manner I want to be
Change will be ever constant throughout our life
We change clothes, looks, jobs, friends & etc.
Every living thing experiences change
Repent = change of my mind
Re -> go back to something
Pent -> highest place (of thinking)
God’s thoughts: highest form
è Lay hold of God’s promises for me.
è No change? No growth.
Greatest enemy of change is tradition
e.g. Fosbury flop; Pepsico
All are changes made for the better
Disciples of Jesus also adapt to changes to turn into somebody different
Luk 19
Do I know my changes? Increasingly I need to know my change
Transformation is a necessity
All changes begins with a decision
- Dedication to the decision
- Disciple to the dedication
Any areas that we need to change?
What will stop us from changing?
1. Pride
2. Fear
3. Rebellion
4. Laziness
5. Ignorance
Denial will not bring us anywhere
Only fools and dead man don’t change
Fools refuse to change while dead man can’t
When change is necessary, not to change is destructive
Pro 1:20-23*-24;5
4 kinds of people are mention in the above verse
1. Simpletons
2. Fools
3. Scorners
4. Wise men
We all start out as simpletons, and then we can either choose to be a fool or a wise man. Be a fool for too long and u will then become a scorner.
Don’t find yourself changing due to a crisis.
Either you lead the change or the change will lead you.

Can you go the Distance?
Is your capacity sufficient for the journey?
It’s going to be exciting but will be with hard work as well.
Look at Peter, he led an exciting life but it is filled with hard work as well.
So what is needed for us to go the distance?

2. I must have a personal conviction of Jesus Christ
Matt 16:16
It’s easy to be part of a herd but when you’re alone, will you still be able to hang-on?
How then to have a personal encounter of Jesus?
i. Never say “No” the 1st time
ii. Just do it
iii. Know the word of God
If we study the word of God, the God of the word will come through for us.

13/10/2007 : Reality as a limiter of life
Reality as a limiter of life
2 Cor 4:18
What is reality? – In the usual situation: what we can see, a fact, the realm of possibilities, etc.
However reality is usually temporal. It is subjected to changes.
Circumstance: made up of 2 words: Circle & Standing
The above gives us the definition: that we’re all standing in the circle of events – different life cycles (which all will come to pass & move on)
Thus it’s important that we anchor ourselves to the Lord as He is the only unchanging thing in the world.
Then when we anchor ourselves to God, we will then move into God’s best for our lives.
Will we be stopped /stumped by the things that we can see?
It’s important that we step out of such circumstances
Pro 23:6
Example: If we ever had a private jet, our reality tells us that we need to get into a car, drive for an hour to the nearest private airport to get into our private jet.
However for Shekih Mohammed (Ruler of Dubai), he could get into his helicopter to ride to the airport.
Yet in fact, he could also build a private airport right next to his house & simply walked into his jet.
Thus! Reality is not fixed!
Our reality is affected by economics
Our economics can be changed by us.
Conclusion: our reality can only be limited by ourselves -> dealing in the realm of the impossibilities.
Do you dare to move forward?
Pro 23:7
Prosperity is not in our bank statement but in the state of our minds
Gen 39:1-2 (KJV)
Joseph was a prosperous man
Scarcity thinking = crisis in your faith
Example: there were tons of reports during the 1980s-1990s that our energy resources will be depleted in 10, 20, 30 or 40 years time.
However as of the 2007 survey done by the World Energy Council; it was concluded that there’s no sign of any energy shortage in the whole world.
The cost of staple food has dropped by half in the last 10yrs.
God is still in control and has provided for the entire world.
The only reason that there’s any shortage in the world is usually a result of corruption, mis-management of the country than anything else.
Thus we do not need the scarcity mindset.
Fact: Bloomberg – there’re 2.3 new millionaires in Asia (2006)
Singapore enjoyed the highest increase: 22.3% in 2006
Pro 4:23
Issues are merely a physical boundary of our lives
God is never limited by our circumstances & neither should we.
Our reality is impacted by our financial position.
However we need to learn not to move in the realm of information but rather revelation.

12/08/2007 : Service with Rev. Dr. A.R. Bernard
Service with Rev. Dr. A.R. Bernard
There’re 2 reasons why human erred.
Don’t know what the scriptures written about us
Don’t understand the power of God
History is plagued by biblical illiteracy and biblical twisting
Thus all the more that we as Christians need to study God’s words for ourselfes
Remember “Kristos Kai Kosmos”
Dan 1:1-7
To achieve greatness in the kingdom, it is through service.
Yet service is in line with depth of our relationship with Jesus
God usually uses captivity as a negative way to achieve a positive outcome
There’s 4 Jews in Babylonian culture that made a difference
Babylonian was then the dominant culture, parallel to whatever is the dominant culture in our world.
Dominant cultures usually give people an opportunity of upward mobility when we accustomed or followed it.
Thus in Daniel, we see that the 4 Jews were given an opportunity of upward mobility.
Offered 3 years of education of the dominant culture.
Ok to learn – upward mobility
Science
Art
Language
Name
Defilement – values & philosophy of the culture!
Food
Wine
Representative of: huge ego, pride, fear, lust, greed, selfishness, ambitious, envy, jealously, etc.
Dan 1:5;8
Thus it’s important that we keep our values systems while we engaged the culture.
We cannot be fearful of the dominant culture, otherwise we cannot lead it to our values systems
We can the science, art, language & even change our names to fit into the dominant culture but we cannot eat into the values & philosophy of the dominant culture.
1 Dan 1:8-10
This chief of the eunuchs, representative of the world, felt that only with the feeding of the values & philosophy then can there be upward mobility.
Yet we, as Christians, should be secured that we don’t have to be like the world to engaged it
Dan 1: 11-16
There is balance to strike between staying straight VS blending/consuming the world
We need to put a limit on how the world influence us
E.g. Denzel Washington – multiple portrayals of evil people. How did he strike a balance? He only play those roles if the evil person repented or he died. He want to show the world through his acting that our actions has a consequences & only repentance can change the day
Spiritual disciplines – keeping the depth of our relationship with Jesus
- Prayer – maintain God’s standard in our lives
- Reading the bible
- Fasting
- Thanksgiving – repentance + forgiveness = confession: cleaning bring healing
- Solitude – apart from the world but it is not loneliness
The world likes to deny the that she need to repent
Discontentment is the driving force of the world but it also destroy the world
Recall God wants to empower us!
3 Jn 1:2
When our soul prospers, then we will prospers in material & health
Because if success alone moves upward without the upward-ness of our soul simultaneously then the danger will be very wide
Talent can get you to the top but only character can keep us there. Character is build about our spiritual disciplines – only with it then creativity continues to be ever flowing.

The Last Trumpet
Mat 24:14;29-31
1 Cor 15:50-52
1st Trumpet was sounded 3.5k years ago
Let 25:8-10
By Moses who passed it to Joseph
A cry of freedom & celebration - burden no other
Blown from town to town, city to city, nation
The people in refuge can now return to their own homes
In the name of the Lord, all is set free
Joseph then passed it to Samuel
Who in turn passed it to young David
David was young & he will also sound the trumpet
Then came Elijah: a prophet like no other
His disciple – Elisha: he honor his mentor a great deal; double miracles!
Jo 2:15
Joel is the next in line
He passed it to the angels who then passed it to Jesus
Jesus was like a trumpet Himself!
He was the end of the atonement. A celebration of freedom that has come to mankind
Lk 4:18
Jesus can bring things back to life
Rom 1:110
Jesus passed it to Peter
Then Paul, then John
Martin Luther also picked up the trumpet
“The just shall live by faith”
John Wesley = Methodist church
Eph 5
Then there are others…
Now it is in our hands. We’re to reach out to the souls in our hands.
Recall the story of how Christianity was stopped when Marco Polo forget to send missionary after promising Genghis Khan that he will. Or the 2 missionary who felt that the route to Genghis Khan's kingdom is too hard for them.
Or how Gandhi was also stopped by the rich christians of his times to come to know God.
Have we also become too busy to reach out to the souls around us?
Do you have the heart of God? His heart is with man. He is looking for the 1 person who will make the difference.
Don't be like Marco Polo or the pastor who prevented Gandhi from coming to know God.
Don't go down in history as the church that got too busy for God's business.

Are You Speaking To Your Mountains Or Are They Speaking To You?
But they don't get bigger but we can
Mk 11:12-14;19-24
Having a God-kind of faith
There will be mountains in life & the time to prepare to meet the mountains in life is when things are going great for you
Many times these mountains tried to tell you they've been around longer than you are & that they're permanent but they forgot that my God is bigger & older than them!
It's my ball game! God has already given me the ability to conquer my mountains
Mk 11:23
Mountains are an opportunity to prove that God's words work!
· The bible said it
· I believe it
· That settled it
Jesus always gets the last words
Don't quit because you cannot be defeated
As long as you don't quit on God, God won't quit on you!
Face the reality - Nobody will care about you like you do...so pray for yourself! Trust in His words!
There is nothing wrong with other activities in life but the only way we get faith is by hearing God's words
So seek to seek God's words!

There is nothing that we exist for other than God! Not a blessing, not a ministry. All of us must make room and time for God.
The first thing God revives is His presence in our lives, because the presence is carried on people, not methods.
When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn in two. God wants room to move among people! If you want to stay in God's midst you need a room to dream. If you don't dream the dreams God has given you, a negative mindset will replace them.

28/01/2007 : Weekend Service with Dr. A.R. Bernard
Kristos Kai Kosmos
Jesus is not here to be above culture or to create a counter-culture but rather He is here to engage.
God gave the 5fold ministers
Apostles: to govern – the cooperation of the people is given to him
Pastors: to guard – provide, protect & the faith of the flock is given to him
Teachers: to ground – they build foundations and they maintain the preachers
Prophets: to give guidance – discernments of both the spiritual and secular is given to him
Evangelists: to gathers – they have the charisma to win people
In the Old Testament, prophets are given the gift to have greater interaction with the society. Usually they proclaim more than they predicts. It the God’s word over the society and not mere foretelling
A pastor, on the other hand, is like a shepherd. He guards the flock and he is usually a very careful man as he knows our respect and faith in him open our hearts to the people he invites. Although other will feel that a pastor controls instead of guarding.
Kristos Kai Kosmos: a prophetic insight over the society
The immediate penetration of the word is crucial as God knows that it is easier to use something spectacular to motivate you into doing God’s will.
I.E. the burning bush got Moses walking in great faith for his entire life
Matt 19:16-26
This rich man is asking which commandments to obey: he is being selective on his obedience to God’s commandments
Jesus gave the man 5/10 of the commandments
Jesus left out the other 5: which was about putting God 1st in our lives
The man put money as his 1st, that’s why he was only able to obey 5/10 of the commandments: which are the character building commandments
Jesus is not against us having money but against money having us
Note: the disciples were astonished by Jesus’ statement, as they are not the poor people. If they were, they wouldn’t be shocked by Jesus’ statement
When we are with Jesus, He will bring money to good use with you. So don’t worry, you will have money
Lk 6:12
The 12 disciples were the apostles: they were given the role of governing
Not a single preacher was picked! And they are all marketplace people. Not from the temple. Because the marketplace is where the real influence of the society is happening. It where policies were made!
Peter & Andrew: tax-collectors
Simon: Jew – politician
Mark: doctor – rich
Jesus is trying to start a new revolution of engaging the culture
The gospel can be preached better when you live out a lifestyle that is of a good standard
James & John: rowdy people, but Jesus nonetheless took them as His disciples as they’re of the marketplace and most importantly they love Him
Because the marketplace has never set the standard for the church => so Jesus wants to impact the marketplace with the marketplace people. Changes comes to society not because you’re in deep relationship with God but because we are in the marketplace
There is difference between the following words
- Secular: activities outside the church that are not in conflicts with the temple
- Secularism: a spirit that seeks to stop people from going to church
- Secularisation: the spirit of taking over an institution (the Pharisees)
The temple of God holds God’s standard for everyone: the 10 commandments tablets
We, as Christians, are responsible of bringing God’s standard into the society so as the temple of God; we cannot lower our standards as judgement starts from the temple. God will judge us 1st!
We’re now the temples holding His standard to go into the society. I.E.: marketplace
So we must reveal Him in our daily life
We have 2 ministry areas: in the temple and in the marketplace
Institutions becomes secularisation when it stops people but themselves

14/01/2007 : How Shall We Live
How Shall We Live?
World view = sum total of our understanding of the world
General Christians' worldview
1. There is a Creator
Everything belongs to God & is subject to Him
2. We are fallen
Sin entered into mankind
3. Redemption
Jesus! Word made flesh = logos
4. Restoration
As such we're to fulfill the following
1. Develop culture
2. Built civilization
2 Pet 3:9
Eez 33:10
Jer 29:4-7; 11
Justification of the culture mandate:
Gen 1:28
Day 6: fruitful & multiply
We can either contribute to the broken down-ness or bring a piece heaven to this earth
How can we contribute?
3 ways -
1. Know the word (logos)
Morals laws
Laws of logic
Principle of rules & communication
Jn 1:1-3
Logos = Sum total of all ideas & thoughts order of the world universal
2. Apply the word (logos)
Root of culture is our beliefs system
Heb 11:3
3. Live the word (logos)
Col 3:9-10

· Nett giver - vs Nett taker
Jn 3:16; Lu 12:15-2; Pro 19:17; 2 Cor 9:7-9
· Globalizes - vs Gullible
Mk 16:15; Acts 1:8
· Advanced – vs "arrested development"
· Problem-solver – vs Problem-maker
1 Jn 5:4; Mk 9:23
· Opportunity-seeking – Opportunity-shunning
Do not be fearful 2 Tim 1:7 The cairos moment
· Resilient – vs Resistance

Nett Taker -> Nett Giver
Gullible -> Globalised
Arrested in Thinking -> Advanced in Thinking

07/01/2007 : The Cultural Mandate (still in editing mode)
The Culture Mandate
1916 Survey: 60% theater owners wanted pictures more suggestive
But in 1980s ago Contemporary Christians think that the world wants wholesome entertainment as they’re sick of being the world. But 20 yrs later it is only still a dream:
Example: Pax TV by Founder Loweel “Bud” Paxson who came up with some wholesome movies: Touched By an Angel, Highway to Heaven, Dr. Clean – Medicine Woman, Promised Land etc. But it got sold off in yr 2002 as viewer-ship drop to 1%!
On the other hand, “Titanic” was warned by Christian leaders that moral Americans may be offended by the foul language, brief female nudity, implied fornication and some scary scenes.
Yet it was the highest grossing movie in history!
CCM was born in 1980s as gospels music wanted to cross over & to penetrate 90% untapped market
CCM was to appeal to believers who don’t got to Christian bookstores
But CCM remains being only mainly sold in Christians bookstores today.
Why?
Example: Amy Grant is 1 of the 1st to cross over. She focused on wholesome romantic love songs instead of gospels. 1991 ‘Baby Baby’ sold 5millions but protests started as the religious Christians wants her to sing only about the worship & faith of God. So many CCM musicians went back to their church. After Amy Grant, never again did any CCM music ever reach her success.
What happened? Why has Christians productions been so ineffective in crossing over & influencing the world?
Even Christians don’t like Christian music!
Reason:
1993 survey 80% Christians go to the movies
This is what Christians think about our contemporary Christians culture?
Christians Popular Arts
· Inferior Imitation - an imitation of real entertainment, many Christians artists wants to preach instead of attaining excellence in the entertainment sense
· Sanitized Version - not close to reality, only about worship & evangelism – only for family-orientated themes
· Limited in Purpose & Content - only about evangelism & loving God
Basically too wholesome & too preachy. Not in touch with reality
We want entertainment to talk to us about life but with some artistic flare in it. The daily temptations of life & how we deal with it?
But just like the world, Christians is interested in love, relationships, marriage, life, health, careers, finances, global economy wars & peace, politics, our future etc.
Popular arts help us to navigate through life
Band ‘U2’ music talks about concern for war, injustice & poverty
Good Will Hunting: Explore difficult issues of life
Matrix: Invisible world behind the natural world
Schindler list: Courage, Sacrifice & Racism
Shawn Sang Redemption: Hope & Fear
I not Stupid 1 & 2: Rat Race in Society
Christian movies are boring….only about the above!?!
But how many of us actually realize that the essence can be found in the bible?
"Writings" of Bibles
· Psalms – songs of frustration, anger, doubt, etc. : the Blues Billboard
· Job – sufferings of life, wants to find meaning in life: movie ‘signs’
· Proverbs – dangers of shortcuts, rewards of honesty: the Simpsons
· Ruth
· Song of Solomon – love & sensual: Pop billboard; celebration of sex (which is holy & a gift from God) & the sensual
· Ecclesiastes – weariness of imperfections in daily life: NYPB
· Lamentations – dealing with grief: Eric Clapton
· Esther – tribute to women
· Daniel
· Ezra
· Nehemiah
· 1-2 Chronicles
Popular Songs, Dramas & Musical
Cultural communicates to us about life
3 Things about Culture
· Culture is an integral part of the human soul
- 2000 Survey 80% of born again Christmas – 7 times more hours each wk watching tv, spend twice more money on entertaining, spend more time surfing the internet then praying or worshiping or buying Christians materials. We consume the mainstream culture – it’s normal
· God speaks through culture
- ''culture" = shared beliefs, values ,ideas, attitudes, assumptions, customs, practices & social behavior of a particular group, nation or people
· God has given us the cultural mandate - Ps 115:16 -> create cultures & build civilizations
- has the same
Gen 1:28
Be fruitful: develop the social world
Harness the natural world

4. He saved his entire nation! - He must have stepped out in great faith: fought a 1/600th chance of winning battle
What did Shamgar do & what can you do to be a hero like him?
He was only a simple farmer!
1. Start where you are
Ordinary but not perfect conditions
Start doing something now!
There's never a perfect condition than now!
No excuse not do anything for God
People will get angry with you when you want to something different
We will never know the long-term effects of our words, ministering, etc.
Just do something good!
Anything good!
Impact someone!
2. Use what you have
a. Your dreams

Have bold & audacious dreams!

b. Your Talent
Shamgar had a clumsy weapon but a weapon nonetheless
Jn 6
God's strength is made perfect in our weakness

e. Your Prayer
Shamgar: A man who hears & quickly obeys
He prays & obeys!
It is better to fail while obeying than not obeying at all
3. Do what I could
Shamgar only did his best. He did not do something that was illogical or impossible. He simply did what he could do. To stand up for his people & to have faith in God.
