-Pst. Mark Conner

How to Grow as a Christian?

Phil 2:12-13(NIV)
We work out & God works in
Spiritual growth is like sailing in a sailboat it needs your effort & the wind
1 Tim 4:7-8
It's about training to it not trying
Gymnasio (Gk.) = train
Discipline of engagement
1. Celebration
Phil 4:4
Celebrate the goodness of God everyday!
Joy is not happiness
Happiness is based on actual event
Joy is knowing God is still on throne even when bad things are going on
Jn 15:11
Learn to be grateful
Replay good memories not bad memories
Learn to be a thermostat not a thermometer
2. Prayer
Ps 62:8
Doing lives with Jesus
3. Reading God's word
2 Tim 2:3
We're to participate in the redemptive portion of bible
Coming to know God
SOAP
Speak
Observations
Application
Prayer
Highest form of worship is obedience
4. Fellowship
Acts 2:42
How loving are we? Towards our friends & foes
5. Serving
1 Pet 4:10

Discipline of disengagement
6. Solitude
Lk 5:16
Pulling away from busyness
Checkpoints, pit stop, etc.
Getting some clarity in life
7. Silence
Eccl 3:7
It's not about how many words you speak but the quality of your words
Jam 1:19
Slow down & listen!
8. Fasting
Mt 6:16-18
9. Sacrifice
Rom 12:1-2
10. Secrecy
Mt 6:1-8, 16-18
Do you have an approval addiction?
You need praises?
Discipline may not always be tough
Self-validating
Discipline is not to earn favor with God
Spiritual disciplines are not a measure of spiritual maturity.
But! Am I becoming more like Jesus?
Building a spiritual growth plan with Jesus
Ruthlessly eliminate all the hurries in your life
Busy is an outward state but hurry-ness is an inward state.
