24/10/2010 : The Work of God

-Pst. Tan Ye Peng

The Work of God

Rom 1:16-17
Mak 8:15-30
Without death, there is no resurrection
The Gospel is about the death of Jesus & then His resurrection
Death is hard to swallow as we are used to live by sight
Yet if we don't go through trials, we won't see the resurrection & we won't be strengthen in our faith towards Him

Peter, like the restored partially blind man, was not fully clear about Jesus
Many times we are like Peter, only seeing Jesus in the manner that we prefer

Mak 8:30-38
Jesus wants us to be weary of the things of men - living by sight and not by faith

Jhn 20
The disciples went to see the empty tomb & didn't believe
Sight is not how Jesus wants us to live by
Sometimes we won't even see the physical things until Jesus choose to reveal it to us
Jesus continues to work so that His disciples come to believe in Him
Jesus wants His disciples to learn to live not by sight but by what Jesus wants us to see

Jhn 6:28-29
The work of God is when we believe in Jesus
An increase in our faith in Jesus

The book of revelations is written in a manner when visions comes, destuctions then come and followed by a promises of restoration

This shows that the Lord has planned for us to walk this journeys of ups and down. However never once is He out of control and not aware of our downs. He continues to gives us visions after visions of being with Him and to come to know Jesus' faithfulness and salavation plans for ourselves. Through all the ups & downs, we will also be changed into the image of God.

17/10/2010 : Jacob and His Crisis of Change

-Pst. Kong Hee

Jacob and His Crisis of Change

Gen 32
"Jacob" means"a supplanter","grabber","scheming person".
Esau became a person who is very carnal just like Isaac
Rebakah was known to be cunning
We become like who we are disciples by and mentored by
Choose your disciples, mentors& advisers carefully
God's kingdom purpose must be done in God's way
Jacob need a deep change in his character

But before every change there's a few stuff to meet...

1. Crisis
All growth is by way of crisis
Every revival is a respond to a crisis
Only in a crisis then we can see our weakness
Jam 1:2-5
Lessons from Job
1. Nothing can happen to us without God permission
2. Sufferings build up our spiritual capacity & our immunity
3. We can't manage the process ourselves but just God
4. Our response to a crisis qualifies us to the next level
Most of the heroes of faith has a lot of troubles & burdens but they are able to above it
Gen 32:24
Hos 12:3

2. Commitment
Gen 32:25-26
Jacob wouldn't let God go - he desires for a transformation
God could end the wrestle in a second but He didn't.
He wants to develop Jacob's character than his comfort
God is more interested in our character than our comfort

3. Confession
Gen 32:27
Jacob has confessed to his name - a supplanter, a grabber& a scheming person
Jam 4:6

4. Conversion
Gen 32:30
Don't try to fulfil your destiny through your own cleverness

Only when we have gone through the above then will we have
a. A new identity in God
Gen 32:28
b. A new encounter in God
Gen 32:29-30
"Peniel" (Heb.) means "face to face"
c. A new walk with God
Gen 32:25;31
Jacob become daily reminded that he needs to depend upon God
He can no longer run away physically
Heb 11:21
It's the meek who will inherit the earth

10/10/2010 : How Awesome is this Place

- Pst. Phil Pringle

How awesome is this Place

Isa 2:2-3
Psm 65
31st Dec 1998 in a C3 conference - prophecy
We are living in the days when millions of people will be coming to the house of God
Gen 28:11-12,17
CHC is a gate towards heavens
Jacob was a part of a twin - he was a supplanter
Esau was hairy& love to hunt
A blessing will never be reversed - although Jacob did things quite dsyfunctionally but he desires for God's blessings
Esau was more based& carnal - thus he was willing to trade it for stew
Jacob then walked into Laban& fell in love Rachel
But he got Leah - crossed-eye cow

Then Jacob has 2 enemies after him
Then he walked in the gate of heavens - he saw angels
There are gateways between earth& hell & heaven
He walk into Luz then changed the name to Bethel
Jhn 14:1-2
People feels anxiety about meeting people. Humans fear rejection greatly
Humans also thinks that God will make us do what we don't wanna do
Sometimes the things that God wants us to do will bring pain& trouble but that doesn't mean that we won't have victory over& love for it

John 14
1. One of their own, Judas, will betray Jesus
Heroes are living above their fumbling& mistakes

Promises of God

The house of God is a place where we get to network with connection for our purpose
We will find the pieces of our destiny puzzles in others

Jonathan& David friendship
Jonathan was to be the next king but when Jonathan met David, he can sense that David will be the next king
Jonathan must has been training to be the next king& he has been visualising that he's the king
1 Sam 23:17
1 Sam 18:3-4
Eph 4:16
When we are in bending movements, it's the ligaments that is holding us together.
So like ligaments, a covenant holds Jonathan& David together
Jonathan sacrifices his nature destiny for David
Unfortunately Jonathan didn't really move on, he continued to stick onto Saul
He was supposed to be ruling next to David but he didn't& he died next to Saul

3 different people in the world
1. Misplaced
2. Displaced
3. Replaced

People need to move together
Misplaced
Pro 27:8

Displaced
Ruth 1:1
Naomi was handed death 3times yet she must be such a testimony that Ruth followed her
Ruth was from Moab & God don't like them but yet Ruth was part of Jesus' lineage

God will uses people who aren't perfect -

Replaced
Mark failed Paul
Paul at first distrust him but later on trusted him again
Mark managed to replace his old self

03/10/2010 : Turning Points

-Pst. Tan Ye Peng

Turning Points

2 Kg 5:1-14

Background of Naaman - the Syrians despise the God of Israel
Because Israel was beaten every time by Syrians although they must have prayed & pleaded with God

2 Kg 1:2
Elisha was in a situation when even the king of Israel was not seeking God

1 Kg 16:24
Naaman bought a lot of money to Israel

2 Kg 5:6
Even in a crisis, God can turn it around - he doesn't just wanna heal physically for Naaman but He turns Naaman around totally to worship Him

2 Kg 12:11-15
Naaman was expecting Elisha to serve him but in the heal, he came to know that he is the servant to the man of God
In the healing, it's a turning point for Naaman

Act 27:22-25

2 Kg 5:20; 8:4
Gehazi turn leprous but he continued to serve Elisha - it's a turning point for him

Naaman was compared to Gehazi

2 Kg 5:2
The little girl was compared to the King of Israel - she lost her freedom but she continued to trust God

Each of them was readjusted in a crisis

Gehazi stumbled in face of money & he had to renew his walk with God

2 Kg 5:7

Elisha was not discouraged despite the situation
Naaman was in a rage but he turn back
Gehazi failed but he continued to stood
The little girl lost her freedom but she kept her faith

Can we learn to stand before God & see our turning points?

26/09/2010 : Weekend Service with Pst. A.R. Bernard

-Pst. A.R. Bernard

Weekend Service with Pst. A.R Bernard

Culture mandate has mission & purpose
The mandate has an agency which will preserve the mandate
Kosmos : world : social order : world system
Preach - announced by proclamation done infectically & authoritatively
Teach - to impart the teaching & doctrines of Christ & to implement the instructions
Make disciples - turn the people who hear the message into followers & learners of the word
Social institutions - Family, religion, education, economics, political, mass media & arts, sports & entertainment

Motivation is not from a ideology but from Christology
Thus we can sit with people who disagree with us because God is bigger than us or them
God will never send us to a place without making sure that it's all prepared for us
All we have to do is to listen & obey

Hos 6:7

Each of the institutions are gateway into the kosmos
Our motivation should not be any ideology but of God
The great commission is for the culture mandate
Purpose for the culture mandate
Acts 26:18
Open the eyes
2 Cor 4:6?
Turn them from the darkness to light
From Satan to God
Received the inheritance promised to Abraham through Christ
Agency that was chosen to engage into the purpose & mission is the church
The agents are the believers
Part of life is about asking, seeking & knocking but Jesus use this instructions for our prayers
In our prayer life
Ask - expressing the desire to God
Seek - seeking the wisdom for the desires
Knock - then we need to be persistent in the knocking so that God will then turn the favour upon you from Satan who is currently the prince of this world. God will not violent another person's will for us
We are not going to be rewarded for our efforts but for the results
If we have not been effective or having good results, we wouldn't be noticed!

05/09/2010 : Lord, Have Mercy (tentative title)

-Pst. Tan Ye Peng

Lord, Have mercy

Mat 15:21-28

Jesus has 5 main discourses in the Book of Matthew 2 of them are in chapters 13 & 18
It talks about the Parable of the Sower & Who shall be the greatest in the Lord respectively.

Mat 15:21
Jesus departed - withdraw Himself & move to a new place
Mat 14:13
Jesus departed too when He heard about John the Baptist being beheaded, when He realized that His own ministry will be in a danger soon
Jesus only commended of 2 person of their great faith - they are all Gentiles
Jesus' burden is for the children of Israel but often His encouragement comes from the Gentiles

How did Jesus see the woman's great faith in just 3 sentences?
Jesus speaks of House of Israel but the woman hears of being a lost sheep
Jesus speaks of Dogs, but the woman hears of the Master's table

Mat 13:53-58
There were no mistake with Jesus' wisdom & great works but the people cannot accept that a countryman like them could do so much
So Jesus' own countrymen was offended

Mat 14:1-4
Herod was offended

Mar 15:12
The Pharisees was offended

Then Jesus finally met the Canaanite woman who was humbled unlike His countrymen, Herod & the Pharisees

Mat 14:20-21
The first feeding of the 5000 was mainly for a Jewish crow
Mat 15:37-38
The 2nd feeding of the 5000 was for a Gentile crowd

Jesus collected fragments - ? Symbolic of Jesus' (leftovers) grace for the Gentiles

Mat 15:29-31

Rom 1:16, 11:11-15
Jesus has satisfied the Gentiles with even the crumbs but couldn't filled some Jews
How is this so?
Because the Gentiles has humbled themselves
Yet not all Gentiles has been satisfied just like the some Jews
We need to be able to know that Jesus' overflowing grace (leftover crumbs) is sufficient for us

Mat 13:58
Peter's faith didn't last & Jesus walked to him

Great faith = having faith in the greatness of our own faith? or having faith of God's great mercy & goodness?

Would we rather be a lost sheep or a master's dog?

Mat 15:25
Reflecting back of Jesus' 2 discourse in chapters 13 & 18
Who shall hear? Someone who swallow all of Jesus' word
Who shall be the greatest? The one with great faith in God's mercy

Psm 145:17-21

How often do we hear God's word & swallow all of it...?
The offended will not be saved
But this Canaanite woman is willing to be a dog & eat of the crumbs will be saved

29/08/2010 : An Undivided Heart

- Pst. Kong Hee

SOT Graduation 2010 - An Undivided Heart

1 Sam 9:1-2
First of Israel is Saul - he was generally a good man
Saul was a hardworking man, a filial son, courageous & anointed warrior of God
Samuel has 3 period - a unique book
Period of the Law
Period of the Priest
Period of the Kings
There are 2 types of kings -
Saul was called & chosen but he did not stay faithful till the end
Mat 22:14
Rev 17:14
Judas was also called & chosen but he also did not stay faithful till the end
Saul had a Divided Heart
He was not always passionate for God, some days he is cold
Unlike David who loved God all his life
2. Saul was a man of Partial Obedience
Saul attempted to do what only a priest can do - offered the sacrifices after waiting for 7days
He always only obey God to an extend
1 Sam 15:22
3. Saul was Spiritually Immature
Saul was not an immoral man but his emotions is childish
He often get into tempers, moods, etc.
Pro 25:28
God is looking for Complete Obedience!
God knows that we're not perfect but yet He can change us & use us.

22/08/2010 : Weekend Service with A.R. Bernard

- Pst. A.R. Bernard

Weekend Service with A.R. Bernard

Culture mandate is a biblical- based philosophy of life
We are subscribing to a Judaism Christianity
There's a covenant with God

Deut 28:13
This covenant of blessings is conditional
A covenant was establish between 2 bodies - God & man
It consisted of benefits & boundaries
Adam break the covenant & the trust with God - only 1 law & 1 boundaries but nonetheless he broke it
All he had to do was to be frightful & multiply, be obedience to the good & respect the boundaries
God is a covenant- keeping God, He keeps His word & agreement
Our security is in the character of God

Likewise in a marriage, things are not the essentials of the marriage. It should not be consequential to the marriage, the wife's security is still not in the materials things but the character of the husband

Digress- What does women want....?
They don't know (what they want) but (they do know) what they don't want

Deut 28
A promise from Yahweh - God is turning a group of prisoners into His chosen people
Yahweh is giving the children of Israel a self-concept
They were taken from Egypt within weeks but 40years was taken to renew their minds
Physically only requires weeks but intellectually took years
A national identity was given to them
In the minds of the Jews- they still identify themselves as so as what God gave them back in Deut 28
Exodus took place around 40 B.C. but till now, they are still attached to this self- concept

And if we subscribe to the same covenant, then shouldn't we also be attached to the same self-concept?
1969- world Jewish conference
6billions population in the entire world, only 13millions of Jews
1/5 of 1% of the world population
US 2% are Jews but they make up 45% of the top 40 richest Americans according to Forbes
1/3 of Americans multimillionaire are Jewish
Have the highest percentages of the annual household income $50k/year
20% of the profs in leading universities are Jewish
25% of the Nobel prize winner for Americans are Jewish
The Afro-Americans also caught this version & stopped being slaves

We will never raise above what we believe about ourselves
We need to dream bigger about ourselves

So what holds & drives us?

1. Our Faith
God is our source of love, life & light

2. Our Family
God establish the structure of family - the foundations of a society is healthy families
It doesn't meant no problems but we can work better with a functional family
A family is the first social structure that God gives

3. Our Education
Our identity in Christ & wealth
True wealth is portable - education will helps you to rebuild your life no matter where you go

4. Communication
Communication creates! God creates the world through word & so can us
Develop our verbal confidence

5. Circumspection
Be selectively extravagant but frugal

6. Be inquisitive
Don't be passive

7. Self-motivation
Continue to move

8. Community
Be involved in each other

08/08/2010 : The Art of Connecting with People

-Pst. Mark Conner

The Art of Connecting with People

Rom 15:13

Life is all about relationships

Genesis was telling us that God believes in having relationships - He made Eve for that purpose
It's thus important to know how to communicate between people - EQ
A good EQ is knowing how how to separate your emotions
Book: "Everybody is normal until you know them."
Nobody is exactly perfect even in the Old Testament

Connecting skills

1. The Art of Acceptance
Jesus has the ability to accept people as they are
We tend to treat people based on our value-system
Jesus sees a "perfect 10" for everyone- Children or outcast
Rom 15:7
Jesus accepted people first before even they change
Remember that everyone is love by God

2. The Art of Listening
Jesus often asks questions so that He can relates to others
Jam 1:19-20
Jesus calls people by their names personally
Don't try to compete the sentences for others
Showing another person's worth by paying attention to their words

3. The Art of Empathy
Listen to the heart & beyond the words
The woman by the well - Jesus listens to her heart & not just her life situation
He sees that she is still thirsty & searching
Remember everyone has a story

4. The Art of Authenticity
We need to be real, open & transparent to others
Mat 26:36-38
Jesus was with His 3 most trusted friends & He asked of them to stay by Him as His heart was deeply sorrowful
In safe relationships- don't do impressions management

5. The Art of Forgiveness
Jesus taught & modeled forgiveness throughout all His ministry
Mat 18:15
Jesus asks us to confront our anger but in asking forgiveness

6. The Art of Loving Confrontation
Eph 4:15
We need to speak to others in Love- not without each other
We need to know how to confront people lovingly
But we can confront others, we need to love them

7. The Art of Encouragement
Seagulls managers are terrible
Encouragement is oxygen to the soul
People can't read our minds
God burst out of heavens declaring that Jesus is His son & that He is pleases with Him although Jesus has not started His ministry yet
Heb 10:24-25
Luk 4:16
Jesus went to the synagogue so as to meet others

Do we need to change? Make new decisions?
Confess our own weakness daily & not just brush it over

Writing to the generic believers
The beginning and the ending of a book is important

11/07/2010 : Weekend Service with Mike Connell

- Pst. Mike Connell

Weekend Service with Mike Connell

Luk 3:21-22; 4:1-2, 14
The wilderness in the bible was a place of barren desert
Jesus went through seasons of preparation before He was ready for His ministry

Deu 8:2-9
God lead His people to the wilderness

1. Wilderness experience is a God-idea
He lead them throughout.
It's not a destination but a preparation

2. Wilderness is a period of humbling
Time for us to seek the face of the Lord
A time when you get your promise from God
David got his Word from the Lord of his future
A period when God is looking to approve you to go to the next level
Heb 3:6
Pressure will reveal what is in our hearts

Exo 15:22-25
The first wilderness & there were 2 reactions- the children of Israel complained but Moses cried out to the Lord
The bitterness in their hearts was exposed with a little disappointment experience, although they just went through a spiritual high
Why did God do so? Because He wants to heal the bitterness in their hearts
When Jesus died on Calvary, He went through all bitterness of our lives. Only when we put our sorrows into Jesus' hands, would our bitterness in our lives be healed
God gave the children of Israel, sweet water after the bitter water

3. Wilderness is a time of making decision when we look beyond the natural
Num 14:1-3
Last wilderness of the children of Israel
Failed with flying colors - they wept with self-pity
Sometimes weeping is alright as you need to draw strength from God & let go of your torment
The disbelief in the hearts of the children of Israel was shown up during this wilderness
But when we blame others for our situation, we chose to not take responsibility for their situation
Continue to act like slave - not responsible for ourselves
God has empowered us to win in the wilderness not to sink back to the old ways

Num 14:22;24
Caleb was God's servant while the others were just "these men"
Caleb was distinguished out as someone with a different spirit
Caleb had fully followed God despite all the seemingly difficulty

Caleb - full of activity in life, provokes others with the tongue, in the household
Caleb did the following
Num 13:30
1. He hushed the negative remarks
2. He encourage the others to ascend to the next level
He asked others to give their lives as a living sacrifice to God
3. Faith
After seeing 40years of funerals, he actually ask Joshua for the hills with the giants - a man with great faith
1 Cor 10:13
God is in-charge at all times - He is not giving you wilderness so that you can shift your blame to others but to go to the next level & bring the next generation into the next level

Thus a period of wilderness is important - but we need to win it.

04/07/2010 : Weekend Service with Rev. Dr. A. R. Bernard

-Pst. AR Bernard

Weekend Service with Rev. Dr. A. R. Bernard

Growth comes to all although not in same likeness
Jam 4:1
On a universal level, conflicts is caused by human desires - without the control of the Holy Spirit (also known as flesh)
It's the relationship of the Holy Spirit or the lack of it that affects the outcome of the world
We should allow the greatest influence of our lives to come from the Holy Spirit

Christians shared values comes from having a structured life -
1. Clearly articulated world view - biblical cosmology
2. Clearly articulated core values - protects my thinking, how I experience the world
3. Clearly articulated core purposes - guides my activities, the standard that I live in

My core values is what I am willing to sacrifice for

AR Bernard's core values
1. Faith - relationship with God
2. Family - on earth, am willing to sacrifice for
3. Education - portable wealth
4. Community - be part of the solution not the problem

What we are in life is often motivated by our values
Every decision we make in life is a valued judgement
In spite of shared values- people can still have values

Joseph protected Mary instead of bringing her to the authorities
He married her & proclaim her as his wife

Doing mercy does not mean giving up righteousness
Mat 25:31-46
The expression of righteousness is mercy not judgement
Jam 1:27
